Newsletter Issue 08 - Dicembre 2018

Time does fly and another year has passed. As we end 2018, we'd like to take the time to thank you for 2018 and wish you love, peace, and joy this holiday season.

Our newsletter is now two years old! It was brought about by the understanding that we all get bombarded with many emails and news which we would sometimes ignore (and therefore, miss) when we're buried in mounds of work. So, we decided to pick industry-changing stories that we've come across every quarter and share them with you. We hope we are able to help sort through all the noise and amount of news coming in every day. We, of course, would also like to thank you for continuing to follow our newsletter.

2018 news had some undeniable trends and insights. For most of the year, there was a lot of AI - both capabilities and ethics, VR/AR's application to TV & Broadcasting, the OTT Race and Competition, and FAANG. And coming in at the latter part of the year, a lot of eSports and 5G articles have come out. We have all of those topics in this issue. Without further ado, we share our last batch of news-worthy items this year.

Cheers to a fantastic 2019!

Storytelling in eSports is very different from traditional sports broadcasting

eSports is emerging as the new, exciting live event consumed worldwide, but, still in its infancy as a broadcast property, it has not concretely defined what makes for a good esports broadcast. Sure, there’s natural strategy in telling the story of esports competitors through interviews or feature packages, but telling the real-time story of the live competition requires producers to step back a bit and consider the core goals of a sports broadcast.

‘Nothing on this page is real’: How lies become truth in online America

It’s official: more people get news from social media than newspapers. It has overtaken print newspapers as a place where people find news. That would have simply meant an evolution of where news is sourced. But that is far from the truth as seen lately, where lies become truth, and the truth sometimes gets buried.

Hybrid IP/Broadcast Data: With Opportunities Come Ethical Concerns

Today, data is power. It shapes targeted advertising strategies and programming decisions, and broadcasters find themselves at a significant disadvantage compared to OTT services who can collect and analyze very detailed audience data sets.
